Political polarization has destroyed a family living in a "peaceful" village in Southeastern Turkey. This is the trailer of a 30-minute documentary that I produced, filmed and edited.

On Oct. 8, 2014, I was after a story about the evacuated Kurdish villages across from Kobani. At one of the villages in Turkey, I met a family that had escaped the war. They had left their home due to constant bombings. However, they were still under great risk in Turkey. The family members were picking cotton on a field right by the Turkish-Syrian border. I was in Ukraine a few weeks after the Maidan protests. Kiev had cooled off but tensions were high in Crimea, which was an autonomous region of Ukraine at the time. Hence, we decided to concentrate our filming on the region. I researched, produced, wrote, directed and edited the following documentary segment that was aired on CNN Turk, on Mar. 15, 2014. John Lennon was shot and killed in front of his New York apartment, 35 years ago. On the anniversary, his fans celebrated his life at Central Park. I shot this video for my advanced video seminar at Columbia Journalism School, with my colleague Taeko Itabashi, and edited it on my own. The video was uploaded on Dec. 9, 2015.

Akbar Haider Kiron and Minhaz Ahmed are two Bangladeshi American intellectuals living in New York City. Although they moved to the United States due to the intimidation they faced for their work, their freedom of expression is still under threat. I shot, wrote and edited this video with my colleague Mantai Chow, and narrated it on my own on Nov. 25, 2015, for my advanced video seminar at Columbia Journalism School.

Turkey’s first presidential election took place on Aug. 10, 2014. During the election, I was at the headquarters of Vote & Beyond, an election-monitoring group based in Istanbul. We shot a documentary about the Turkish defense industry in secret production facilities that had never been filmed before. Moreover, a few lead engineers confirmed to me on tape that some of the projects were in fact lagging behind their international competitors. My responsibilities for this documentary included research, production, camera direction, script writing and editing. The end product of a month’s hard work became one of the most popular episodes of our weekly documentary show.

I produced five-minute investigative pieces for a live news show called “Off the News.” The segment aired on CNN Turk, on Apr. 11, 2014, was about the legal loopholes exploited by Turkish companies and government officials to complete illegal construction projects.
